Traditional Diet

1. How good is traditional Indian diet? What are the basic nutrient requirements and their sources?
Every individual has different needs of nutrients depending on age, height, gender, health parameters and ethnicity. Our traditional Indian diet mostly consists of a cereal, pulse or dairy and vegetable source. Every nutritious meal should have appropriate quantities of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and fats.
Indian food sources for these nutrients are:-
Carbohydrates:- Chapati, rice , rawa, poha and other grain dishes.
Proteins:- Dal, soyabean, pulses, sprouts, milk and milk products.
Vitamin & minerals:– Fresh fruits, vegetables, some grain husks.
Fats:- Ghee, oil, deep fried food items, butter, cream (malai),full fat paneer.

If we eat all these nutrients in balanced quantity, the meal would be able to give all necessary health benefits.

2. What are the problems with traditional Indian diet ?
- Most of us do not quantify food well.
- All liked and even disliked food items should eaten in specified quantity.
- Traditional combinations of food have scientific basis. Follow them.
- Eg. Varan/ dal rice should be sprinkled with lemon as it improves protein absorption.
- The factor that is sometimes overdone is the fat/ oil used. Overuse of oil/ghee/ butter/ malai etc should be strictly avoided.
- Avoid overcooking of vegetables as it leeches out its nutrients .
